Lately my running has Sucked (with a capital S because it’s really been that bad).
I’ve been struggling HUGE to keep up with my running friends for months now, and it’s kind of made me hate running. Every run feels like I’m running uphill with a weight vest on. When my alarm goes off at 5:30 am it takes ALL of the motivation I have to get up. If it weren’t for Becky and Juliette I would just roll over and go back to sleep. Thankfully my friends have been super patient with me. They’ve kept encouraging me to keep running with them, and they patiently wait for me when I need to stop to walk (which unfortunately happens pretty frequently during our runs).
The moment of truth…
I put new batteries in my fitbit aria scale in an effort to figure out why my running has been so hard lately… Sure enough, I’m lugging around 10 lbs more than I was a year ago. Weight maintenance is hard, even as active as I am, I struggle too.
According to the log in the Fitbit app, since October 2, 2015 (the last time I weighed myself), my body fat percentage has actually gone DOWN 1.5% while my weight has gone up 8 lbs, so when it comes to my exercise I must be doing something right.
I struggle the most with NUTRITION and this weight gain is the prime example of that. I have an insatiable appetite – I want to eat everything!
So I could whine and complain about this situation, or I can do something about it. In all honesty my nutrition struggle has been because I’ve been too lazy to go grocery shopping to stock the kitchen with convenient fruit and veggies. Our hockey schedule and my busy work days has left me feeling unmotivated to go to the store in the evenings to buy the real food that keep me full and satisfied. Instead I’ve been eating all.the.chips and all.the.cookies and all.the.pasta. I’ve also been buying a muffin as a mid-morning snack most mornings at work. (It’s time to get back to eating my apples)
Reflecting on what I struggle with helps me to realise that I need to do a few things to be successful in losing these pounds that slow my running pace. I also want to decrease my body fat percentage by doing the following:
- I need to grocery shop and stock up on nutritious snacks. Convenience is the biggest factor in my food choices. If I can easily grab an apple, then I’ll eat it over popping a bag of popcorn.
- I need to get back to meal planning (and food prepping). Figuring out what I’m going to make for breakfast, lunch and dinners, and having the food on hand to make it will also help.
- I need to log my meal plan into a food journal like MyFitnessPal BEFORE I eat it. I then need to adjust my log to reflect what I ACTUALLY ate throughout the day.
- I need to lift. I love cardio, but it makes me so very hungry. Strength training doesn’t do that to me, and it has the added bonus of helping me to build lean (strong) muscle! I realised this late December and set my goal for this year to LIFT but I honestly haven’t been doing nearly as much of that as I should.
I feel so inspired right now to make my running easier, and I can’t wait to get going on this journey and I’m so glad to have all of you to support me!
