The “just for today” challenges!
As you already know, exercise has many health benefits such as increasing your fitness level and helping you lose weight. One benefit of exercise that is often overlooked, however, is that exercise can improve your mood and give you a general feeling of well-being. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a kind of depression affects 4-6% of North Americans, causing feelings of sleepiness, increased appetite and weight gain. Mental health providers are now often prescribing exercise to help treat depression.
Day 3 Challenge: Do 30 minutes of moderate to intense exercise.
Today, I challenge you to get at least 30 min of moderate to intense exercise, then journal how it made you FEEL.
Exercise decreases the stress hormone cortisol and increases endorphins. Endorphins, the body’s natural feel good chemicals, are released through exercise and they boost your mood naturally. In addition to the release of endorphins, exercise also releases adrenaline, serotonin, and dopamine. These chemicals work together to make you feel good. Because I suffer from SAD, I often say running is my drug of choice.
I’m going to get my 30 min of exercise in during my lunch break at work. Although it’s winter up here in the Great White North, I still like to run outside because of how good it makes me feel. So today’s just for today challenge is not meant to punish you, but to help you feel GOOD – you’re only one workout away from a good mood!
Update: Got out for my run & I feel a lot better now!!
What are you waiting for? Stop reading this and get out there – play with the kids, take the dog for a walk, swim some laps at the pool, or take a class at the gym!
Have a great night!
PS – you’ll love tomorrow’s challenge 🙂
