Christmas is a busy time of the year, maybe not for daddies (she says as she ducks), but it certainly is for mommies. Buying gifts for family, extended family, teachers, crossing-guards, coaches… Getting all of the stocking stuffers, planning meals, taking the kids to see Santa, helping them to write letters to Santa, making sure they get a response, wrapping gifts, decorating the house, buying the groceries, preparing meals …
The list goes on and on!
No wonder we’re stressed and unable to sleep due to anxiety!
How do you handle the stress? How do you stay on track?
Personally, my drug of choice is exercise – Oh Jillian Michaels, thank you for helping me to beat holiday stress this year!
Yes – I’m beating stress with exercise. Why? Studies show that there are stress-relieving benefits of doing the hustle & getting your sweat on, such as:
Endorhpin Release – with exercise, your body releases greater amounts of endorphins, the powerful, pain-relieving, mood-elevating chemicals in the brain. Depressed people often lack these neurochemicals. Endorphins are natural pain killers that also help lift your mood. The runner’s high is a result of the increased endorphins in the body. Exercise, therefore, will keep your body functioning properly and will keep you feeling both relaxed, refreshed and promote deep, restful sleep.
Cortisol – Chronic stress forces the adrenal glands to produce high levels of cortisol and many women experience symptoms such as weight gain, fatigue, insomnia, fuzzy thinking, depression, cravings and mood swings. Once the adrenals become depleted, it can lead to adrenal exhaustion and much more serious health concerns. But guess what? Regular exercise reduces the amount of cortisol your body releases in response to stress.
As you can see, finding the time to exercise is very important to your body, particularly when you’re stressed because it can help you to get the rest you need, and help you think more clearly. (Therefore preventing you from forgetting to buy the milk each time you visit the grocery store).
To help you get some exercise, I found this cute video of Jessica, Toni and Brittney doing the Christmas Hustle – why don’t you give it a try?
