Because I live in Canada, I have two choices for running in the winter. I can either:
- Overheat on a dreadmill in a stuffy gym while people tap their feet and anxiously glance at their watches waiting for their turn to run,
- Layer up and run outside.
And as many of you know, I choose option #2. I suck it up, throw on half my running wardrobe and just run. When I started running 10+ years ago, I started running in the spring for a fall half marathon. Then, after the race, I just kept on running outside, layering up as the weather began getting colder. It never ever occurred to me that some people would find this nutso, crazy etc. It also never occurred to me that some people only run when the weather is nice, or run indoors through the winter.
Truthfully, once all the layers are on, winter running is no different from summer running. With the proper layers it really isn’t that cold out. Sure, sometimes the wind can be really strong, and occasionally there’s a really bad snowstorm, but running through those just make you that much more badass. If you ran inside during the winter you would also miss the opportunity to take in the wonderful sights, such as these beautiful creatures that I encountered on my lunch run last week:
Seeing these beautiful creatures really makes feel happy to alive. As well, a nice treat afterwards to warm me up is very well deserved and tastes that much better:
Someone wise once told me that there is no such thing as inappropriate weather, just inappropriate clothing and I have to say that I completely agree. Yay for winter running!!
