Happy Monday everyone!
I hope you’re all doing well. Can you believe that there are only 18 days left until Christmas and only 24 days left of this year?!? Yikes! I am starting to get a really good handle on my Christmas preparations. Most of my Christmas shopping is done, and our tree is up! I’d show you another picture of our tree, but I already posted it twice last week on the blog so I’ll save you from having to see it again 🙂 I personally love the soft glow from the lights on the tree – there’s something so warm and comforting about it. This year was the earliest I’ve ever put the tree up – it’s not that I’m super organised this year or anything. I think it’s more of a reflection of how much easier it is to get things done around the house now that the kids are older and don’t need constant supervision.
It’s also easier now to sneak off and do a workout – but I’m still not ok to take off and go for a run. My oldest is 10.5 and my youngest just turned 5 so we’re not quite at that point where the oldest and middle can babysit the youngest while we’re out. Which means hubby has to be home for me to run which pretty much only leaves 6am as my running time, That said, if he isn’t home I can certainly grab my kettlebell for a quick living room workout as long as I don’t mind being interrupted every 4 minutes to break up fights, get people drinks or find xyz lost item. I can also keep up with the 25 Days of Strength Advent Calendar. My youngest daughter LOVES to join in and do the exercises with me.
This week I officially dropped the ball on the Runners World Holiday Run Streak #RWRunStreak – there’s just too much going on in our lives right now for me get out and run, but as I said above, I can always do a workout, it just can’t always be a run. I made it to Monday with the streak, then missed because between work, softball practice, and swimming lessons there just wasn’t a free moment for me to sneak out until 9pm. I’m not comfortable with night running on my own so I let it go. I know I’m supposed to be leading by example, but truthfully I totally understand the struggle to find the time for fitness, and the struggle to find the motivation to use the time for fitness when it’s found – I like to curl up on the couch and watch Jennifer Jones on Netflix just as much as anyone else 🙂
The week wasn’t a total bust though. Tuesday night I swung the kettlebell around for a quick 20 minute hiit workout including the tuck jumps from the advent calendar, then Wednesday I walked, and walked, and walked all around Niagara Falls, NY on our annual girls shopping trip (11,295 steps according to my Jawbone) + did the pushups with shoulder touches. On Thursday morning we got up and walked and walked and walked some more (9,114 steps according to Jawbone) + did the wall sits. Now my Christmas shopping is almost complete! On Friday I felt like I really needed a run or else I would strangle someone so I made sure I arrived to work early enough that I could take a longer lunch to run. Man was that run ever glorious!!
Later that night I took the girls skating while Amber was at skating lessons. We were joined by my daughters’ best friends and my best running friend, Juliette. I was VERY pleasantly surprised because I didn’t know that Juliette could skate. It looks like we have a new Friday night activity to do together.
On Saturday we had a crazy day of hockey: 4 practices and a hockey game! It would have been nice if they were all at the same arena but unfortunately no, they were all over the place so hubby and I juggled and chauffeured. I only managed to crank out the single leg deadlifts from the advent calendar .
Sunday was another busy hockey day. Brooke had a game at 10:15, and Sierra had one at 1:15 so we all went to both games. I was glad I did because it was nice to see how much the girls have improved. Later that day I snuck out for another glorious solo run.
I headed over to the local pond and greatly enjoyed the views:
This week’s fitness plan:
This week is already off to a good start because I got up early and did a DailyBurn #blackfire workout with Becky and Juliette!
Monday: DailyBurn #Blackfire workout + day 7 of advent calendar
Tuesday: 5 mile run + day 8 of advent calendar
Wednesday: 3 mile run + day 9 of advent calendar
Thursday: 5 mile run + day 10 of advent calendar
Friday: skating after work with the girls + day 11 of advent calendar
Saturday: kettlebell workout + day 12 of advent calendar
Sunday: 3 mile run + day 13 of advent calendar
As a reminder, you can still join in with the 25 days of strength advent calendar. There are a few different ways you could use this :
1) Do three sets of as many of the day’s exercise as you can in a minute for each set, or
2) Build up the exercises into a kick butt circuit, ie: Day 1: Three sets of Tuck Jumps, Day 2: Three sets of Tuck Jumps and Pushups with Shoulder Taps, Day 3: Three sets of Tuck Jumps, Pushups with Shoulder Taps and Wall Sits.
However you choose to approach this is up to you.
Most of these are body weight exercises that you can do anywhere and almost all of the exercise instructions can be found in this one great post on Greatist. I did this on purpose to keep things simple.
Despite the struggles to find time to run amongst the girls sports, it was a great week, but I’m also ready to make this week’s fitness plan happen!
Have a great week everyone!
