This is my Mamavation post for Monday March 1, 2010
Last week I was injured. I tried on Monday to run slow and easy but my calf just wasn ‘t cooperating. I was bummed out (and in pain). My hubby was also away in LA and we had our FIRST snowy week this whole winter. (Folks ” I live in Canada and we are setting a record this winter for the LEAST amount of snow in like 50 yrs!). I could have let the snow, the injury and hubby ‘s trip get me down. In fact, last year this series of events would have been cause for me to put on my comfies and cuddle up with a beer or two every night and a bag of chips after the kids went to bed. That ‘s the thing with training, exercise and living a healthy life – sometimes things just get in the way. Actually there ‘s always something that gets in the way. So I had to deal with it. I made a promise here last week that it wasn ‘t going to get me down and I made a mental choice to embrace the situation. I could have excuses or I could have fitness ” so I chose fitness.
How did I do it?
Knowing hubby was going to be away, I decided to start the week with healthy food available to me. On my way home from work Monday night I stocked up the house with veggies and healthy food so that if I was going to resort back to my emotional eating it would have to be on carrots, celery, salad, apples, bananas, grapes etc … It worked! I ate my 7-8 servings of veggies everyday! Snacking on healthy stuff made me feel better about myself and it gave me more energy! I tried running that day but my calf definitely had another idea ” it was so sore that I was altering my gait and could feel shinsplints coming on.
Tuesday ” I had a lunch time Yoga class and because I couldn ‘t get my morning swim in with hubby away, I decided to take the kids sledding after dinner. My 2 yo, Brooke, is too small to get back up the hill herself so I had to run down the hill and pull her back up again. To be honest we were having so much fun that none of us cared that it was 7:30 pm, dark and getting colder by the minute. The nearby homes cast enough light on the hill that we could see and there was about 5 other families there. I got some exercise, the kids had a blast and they went to bed very easily for me ” BONUS! After they went to bed I did my new Tracey Mallett ” belly workout video. Man! She really made me work! My abs were on FIYAH afterwards!
Wednesday – my leg still wasn ‘t well enough to run on so I did a 3k power walk with my hand weights around the park on my lunch break. While walking I did bicep curls, overhead tricep extensions, lateral arm raises and forward arm raises in sets of 20 reps. I was able to complete that circuit 3 times throughout my walk ” I felt amazing afterwards! That night we went sledding again ” yay more exercise! Again, they went to bed easily.
Thursday – I couldn ‘t swim and my leg was still too tender to run, so I did the powerwalk again. I can ‘t believe how much more intense a walk is with weights ” you seriously need to try it! That night the whole gang was tired, cranky and missing daddy. The kids really needed a night of rest and relaxation, and truthfully, so did I. We stayed in and played games, art etc …
Friday ” I skipped my lunch power walk because we had another snow storm, I was late and I had to get my work hours in. It would have been nice to do the walk because I probably would have been far more productive at work. That night the snow on my ridiculously long (and wide) driveway needed to be shovelled because I got stuck twice on the driveway when coming home from work. So afetr dinner, we all put on our outdoor gear and “shovelled  (I shovelled and the kids made snow angels).
Saturday ” hubby finally came home but was exhausted from travelling so I couldn ‘t get my run in.
SUNDAY I RAN!! 13k at race pace! My leg felt great! It was awesome!
Despite my awesome week the scale only went down 0.2lbs. But really … who cares? I really could have had a bad week, but I persevered ” I found a way to make exercise fit in, I made the week fun for the kids and I set a great example for them!
