Another school year is fast approaching… If your life is anything like mine, there’s so much to do to get the kids ready for school that it’s hard to take enough time to choose the right shoes for the kids. I have to admit that I’m guilty of thinking “They don’t last very long so I’ll just go grab something at the discount store” or “They will out grow them so fast I don’t want to spend a lot of money”, but truthfully spending some extra time and money on finding quality shoes that will not only last longer but also support their feet will be well worth it in the long run. Trust me, over the years I have made my share of shoe shopping errors.
Back-to-school Shoe Shopping Tips
- Get your child’s feet measured and their shoes professionally fitted.
While I agree it’s hard to predict when a child’s feet will grow and how long their shoes will fit, if the shoes are too big they won’t support your child’s feet and could wear out even faster because they are sloppy. By getting your child’s feet measured and their shoes professionally fitted, the chances of their shoes fitting longer improve. A trained fit professional can fit your child’s shoe so they have some growing room but still have a neat supportive fit so your child is comfortable and safe.
- Give yourself time to find a shoe that fits right.
Unfortunately, kids shoes don’t all fit the same. Just because you child was fitted in a specific size, they may not wear that size in different style. Take the time to try on different sizes in different styles to make sure you get the best fit possible in each shoe you buy.
We found that unfortunately Converse shoes fit a little bigger and are a little wider through the heel, so they don’t fit Sierra at all. Although she absolutely loved this shoe on our recent shopping trip to Sport Chek, she had to choose a better fitting shoe instead.
- Avoid hand-me-downs.
This is my youngest daughter’s favourite tip. In general, shoes should not be passed down from older siblings or friends. Even shoes that appear in good condition can have break-down of the inner materials that provide support. Sharing shoes could also spread infections that cause warts or fungus from one child to another.
- Look for a shoe with good support.
When it comes to selecting a style, my recommendation is to buy athletic shoes. If your children are like mine, they’re in a shoe for eight hours a day, because of that support is critical. Chances are they also have gym daily, therefore it is even more important that they have a shoe that fits well and supports their feet. Since many athletic brands offer children’s sizes as well as adult sizes, they use similar technologies and components in the scaled down sizes. Besides, wearing a shoe that’s conducive to being active will allow kids the freedom to run and play.
This last tip is very important….
- Set the shoe shopping guidelines but allow your child to choose their own shoe.
Let your children know ahead of time know that their feet will be measured by the store staff and that the shoe they choose must fit properly, and be supportive. By allowing your children to choose their own shoes within your guidelines they will pick a shoe that BOTH of you are happy with. I have made the mistake of choosing shoes for my kids and unfortunately that has led to them making 1000 and 1 excuses for why they can’t wear their new shoes and they crammed their feet into the old worn out shoes instead. Our favourite store for back-to-school shoes is Sport Chek. There are a lot of options within my shoe shopping guidelines for the girls to choose from, so we all leave happy.
This year’s hot new shoes
According to my daughter’s (who apparently are much more in the know me than when it comes to kids back-to-school shoes), the hot new shoes for this school year are:
And last but not least,
