Over the past month I’ve been getting a lot of PR pitches for products that I “absolutely MUST tell my reader’s about because oh-my-goodness either they or their mom’s will love this“. I wouldn’t buy a single one of those things, so I rejected every single one of those pitches.
You know why? Because in my opinion none of them addressed what I feel moms need the most:
Mom’s (like me) need time – we need time to take care of ourselves. We spend a lot of time looking after the needs of everyone else in our family, and not enough time on the one person who matters the most. Ourselves.
Why is time a good gift? Well the gift of time will allow us to improve our health, by allowing us to:
- Sleep-in – lack of sleep causes an increase in the stress hormone cortisol (which I’ve written about before). Giving mom time to get some extra sleep will help her make better food choices, lower her stress and help her to be more fun to be around.
- De-stress – take a relaxing bath or read a book. Stress, like lack of sleep, contributes to heart disease and poor food choices, so spending time doing things that alleviate stress will help keep mom healthy.
- Exercise – in mom’s busy day there often isn’t enough time to exercise. Exercise helps to prevent heart disease and stroke (which is the #1 killer of women).
When I asked my twitter followers what they wanted most for Mother’s Day, many of them responded with things like:
- fitness gear
- race entries and
- time to train/run races.
And I totally have to agree with them – for Mother’s Day my family is giving me time… Time to go run the SportingLife 10k race. (I’m busting at the seams with excitement over doing this completely alone! I cannot wait!)
So in my opinion, you can skip the fancy creams, gadgets, foot baths, etc… (yes – my hubby gave me a foot bath 2 years ago) and give mom what she needs most: TIME. (Though I will admit that a bouquet of flowers to go with the free time would be a nice touch).
Happy Mother’s Day!
Question/Sharing: What do you want for Mother’s Day? What will you be giving your own mother for Mother’s Day?
